After Jon and I moved into our apartment, I immediately wanted to customize everything. We purposely bought all neutral furniture (it’s more versatile over the years) but we knew we wanted some color incorporated into our home. A colorful bench was the perfect solution. This bench is super flexible around your home, and seats up to three people. Unless they’re very small or very large humans. You understand.

(Bench inspiration from Christina Diaz.)

Ikea Sigurd Bench
Various Color Samples (Whatever’s your fancy)
Carpenters Glue
8x Planks of Pine (15″ x 5.5″ x 5/8″)

First, you’ll paint the wood using a fine brush or small paint roller to coat each plank. Paint the topside and edges of the planks. Knowing people will be sitting on these planks, you’ll need at least two coats (maybe three).

While the paint dries, navigate your way through the 8 pages of assembly instructions for the Sigurd bench. At only 8 pages, we got off easy on this Ikea piece.

Once you have your bench assembled and wood painted, use carpenter’s glue to adhere the wood planks to the bench. Clamp the wood planks down to the bench and let dry for 24 hours. Once dry, have a sit and admire your work!
